Summer is finally bringing the heat, and with that comes the Selkirk Port Market sponsored by Access Credit Union, with the first one taking place July 24 at the Waterfront.
It’s a rain or shine event, so if the sun doesn’t shine there’ll still be fun at the market, unless of course there is lightening or very high winds.
Entertainment, food and 45+ vendors each week
“We’re looking forward to the last two Wednesdays in July and all in August and the chance for everyone to shop at the 45-plus vendors at the Port Market,” said Ellie Longbottom, Culture Coordinator for the city.
“It’s a great chance to gather outside and enjoy the market, the food, and the entertainment. We’ve got all the favourite activities returning as well as a new twist, which will be fun for everyone.”
The new twist is courtesy of United for Literacy bringing in speakers each week in addition to its reading tent.
The goal of the reading tent is to reduce the loss of knowledge and skills between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next. United for Literacy staff engage kids in fun and inclusive activities based on diverse learning styles and reading levels. More than just reading, the staff engage learners in crafts, reading circles, and movement-based activities before sending them off with a free book to take home.
Media sponsor is the Selkirk Record.
Hard work and dedication on showcase
Market coordinator Angie Neeth says the excitement of a summer market never seems to fade.
“The returning vendors have said they look forward to the Selkirk Port Market all year long, Neeth said.
“It’s a time when their hard work and dedication is presented for all to experience. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to coordinate the market with the right mix of talented vendors who have – over the years – become friends with participating vendors as well as with people who regularly visit the market. It’s really a very special time.”
Each Wednesday the Market will have different vendors, and a list of the vendors will be provided on Facebook via the Selkirk Port Market and Instagram selkirk_port_market accounts each week.
There will be everything from everyone’s favourites – the fresh vegetables, to hand crafted jewelry, home-made baking, jams, jellies, tea, clothing, body care, dog treats, buskers, food trucks, you name it, the Market will have it.
Guided walking tours each week
Red River North Tourism will be offering walking tours that will alternate from week to week, taking participants on a journey through the city’s rich history, culture and murals. Dates and times for the guided tours will be announced soon.
Neeth will be dedicating a spot to drop off non-perishable food items for the Selkirk Food Bank. Non-perishable food items, and monetary donations of any denomination are graciously accepted to help those needing food throughout the community.
Selkirk Fair Trade will have a booth set up at the market and will provide information about Selkirk’s status as a Fair Trade Town. The city earned the designation of Fair Trade Town in 2017. That same year, the City of Selkirk was named Fair Trade Workplace of the Year.
There will be buskers each week, so bring a lunch or buy lunch from a food truck and enjoy the entertainment.
