The City of Selkirk Operations Department is conducting a pilot project during this year’s spring clean-up taking place May 7-11.
While residents can expect their non-hazardous waste to be collected on their regular garbage pick-up day, any mattresses that are part of the waste will remain curbside until Friday May 11th.
Selkirk has teamed up with Mother Earth Recycling (MER), an aboriginally owned and operated Social Enterprise that provides unique and reliable recycling services, while also creating meaningful jobs and training opportunities.
MER, Winnipeg’s first and only Mattress Recycling Facility, separates the mattress into fabric, foam, metal and wood categories to later be recycled. All the materials make their way into secondary markets (foam into carpet underlay, metal into cans, wood into crafts or fire wood, and so on). At the end of the day, the only left overs are a few pieces of plastic corners off box springs and the occasional zipper!
Ninety-five percent of the material in your mattress will be recycled and we thank you for helping the environment.
Mattresses will be picked up on Friday May 11th. If by Monday, May 14th your mattress has yet to be collected, please contact the Operations Dept. at 204-785-4930.
