Junior Lifeguard Club

The City of Selkirk is dedicated to the safety and wellbeing of its citizens and understands the important role Lifeguards and Swim Instructors play in keeping our aquatic facilities enjoyable and safe. As such, the City of Selkirk is offering FREE certification courses to cover the training costs associated with becoming or recertify as a Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor.

About the Training Program

Courses Offered

  • Standard First-Aid & CPR-C Recertification (8 hours)*
  • Swim for Life & Lifesaving Instructor Course (44 hours)
  • National Lifeguard – Pool (44 hours)
  • National Lifeguard – Pool Recertification (4 hours)*
  • Swim for Life Instructor Recert (8 hours)*
  • Lifesaving Instructor Recertification (8 hours)*

*Attendance is mandatory for 100% of each course.
*Recertification courses are for individuals who previously held certification and require renewal to maintain eligibility.

Please Note: All participants will be responsible for supplying their own manuals/supplies required for the course. A detailed list of course materials, textbooks and supplies will be provided upon acceptance into the free training.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants applying for free training must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be at least 15 years old by June 25, 2025.
  2. Have completed a minimum of Grade 10 education.
  3. Successfully completed all required pre-requisites prior to each course start. Read more here about course pre-requisites.
  4. Demonstrate swimming skills equivalent to or exceeding the Lifesaving Society’s Swimmer 6 standard.
  5. NOTE: Preference in candidate selection will be given to returning City of Selkirk employees and those that commit to working for the City of Selkirk’s 2025 swim summer season (end of June-Sept 1). Spots in the program may be grants to those that do not meet this requirement, should space in courses be available. We encourage all to apply.

Additional Information

  • Priority hiring for the Selkirk Park Pool & Splash Pad will be given to candidates who successfully complete the training and have previously worked at the Selkirk Park Pool & Splash Pad. Completion of training does not guarantee employment or full-time hours.
