The City of Selkirk will be temporarily closing Selkirk Park to vehicle traffic as of April 9th.
This is an annual closure that is initiated after the river ice becomes unsafe following the amphibex ice breakup. Spring brings rising river levels and a potential for flooding which city staff need to prepare for.
The closure, which is anticipated to re-open on May 11th, also allows staff the time to prepare Selkirk Park and enhance its features for the upcoming season.
Staff takes this time to prepare the campground and washrooms by putting out tables, garbage receptacles, fire pits, and stocking washrooms. Electrical services have to be re-connected and the water lines have to be open so that they can be tested for breaks and repaired if necessary. Camp sites are cleaned and swept with the grass sweeper and any pruning and general brush clean up takes place then as well.
We anticipate the park will be closed to vehicle traffic until the opening weekend of the campground in May, but this is depending on weather and river conditions.
Pedestrian traffic is encouraged to stay on the dyke paths, and to beware of rapidly changing weather and river conditions.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and we will provide updates HERE
