If there ever was a summer to get outside, it’s the summer of 2018, and the City of Selkirk is proud to provide youth an opportunity for high quality sport and recreation, along with some socializing, through a new free program called Play on the Move.
Play on the move is open to school-aged children aged 6-12 and offers a structured and supervised environment where they can play sports and games with other kids, make new friends and take part in a healthy lifestyle.
Shelley Leonard, Program Coordinator for Culture, Recreation and Green Transportation, said Play on the Move is designed to get kids outside, play and have fun with others in a safe and organized environment.
“We’re really excited about this new program that offers so many great opportunities for Selkirk youth,” Leonard said.
“The weather is fantastic this summer and it’s great to get kids out into nature and living a healthy lifestyle.”
Providing optimal recreational opportunities
The City of Selkirk’s vision is to provide the best opportunities an urban centre can, and its Strategic Plan makes it a priority to offer the best recreational opportunities and make use of outdoor spaces.
Play on the Move will be held from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Daerwood School on Tuesdays and Ruth Hooker School on Thursdays.
Joel Makara, Summer Programmer with the City of Selkirk, said there’ll be plenty for kids to do and they’ll be smiling, and maybe huffing and puffing, from all the running around they’ll be doing.
Activities will vary from week to week, depending on how many kids are out, Makara said, but games like ladder golf, Frisbee toss, dodgeball and soccer will likely occur.
“It’s going to vary from week to week depending on participants but I have a variety of different games that we could play,” Makara said.
“And also I would definitely take suggestions from the children coming out to the event because in the end it is all about them and making their experience as fun as it can be, so if there are particular games that they want to play then we would definitely play those as well.”
Play on the Move starts July 26 and runs until Aug. 21. The program is free of charge to Selkirk youth and there is no registration required; just show up ready to play!
