The City of Selkirk is well experienced in preparing for spring conditions and have plans in place to mitigate the flood risk to the City. A major component of these plans includes filling in the temporary dykes that we have in various locations throughout Selkirk to protect the City.
At this time the risk is low and we are following routine which will see work to fill in dykes in Selkirk Park starting today. The Selkirk Park at the boat launch and canoe club are the first two locations of focus.
Please note that vehicle access will be limited to the area and we ask that the public stay away from the area to allow the heavy machinery to work safely.
We will continue to post updates as we await the melting process and receive future predictions.
Current Manitoba Flood predictions estimate water levels in the Red River to potentially reach 2009 levels in ideal spring melt conditions and potentially to 2011 levels if conditions are not favorable.
The City of Selkirk is prepared to manage the levels and we do have plans in place should further mitigation be required to ensure public safety.
