The weather is finally beginning to heat up and it’s just in time for the much-anticipated return of summer events in the City of Selkirk.
Music on Manitoba kicks off on Manitoba Avenue East June 11 with Redwood – a Neil Young Tribute band at 7pm followed by a performance by Kendra Kay.
Culture Coordinator for the City of Selkirk, Ellie Longbottom, says after two long years of COVID cancellations, excitement for the return of summer entertainment is building.
“I’m excited for the return of events and I know Selkirk residents are as well,” Longbottom said.
“People loved the entertainment at the Waterfront and there’s a buzz about the summer weather finally warming up and people are looking forward to getting outside to watch bands again. It’s going to be great.”
Music on Manitoba, other than Canada Day
Typically held at the Waterfront, the free summer concert series will move to Manitoba Avenue due to construction on Eveline Street. Longbottom said the street will be closed to vehicle traffic on the days of concerts from noon until 11pm but that the city is encouraging people to visit the area businesses on foot.
Besides the live entertainment there will also be food trucks.
The city’s Strategic Plan makes having a vibrant, safe and healthy community a priority, and the Selkirk Concert Series achieves that goal by making use of Selkirk’s natural features and outdoor spaces, providing the best recreational opportunities for residents and by revitalizing downtown.
“The Waterfront Concert Series always drew a crowd from near and far and it grew in popularity year over year,” said Duane Nicol, Chief Administrative Officer for the city.
“Our events team works diligently and has shifted to Manitoba Avenue East this year and has created first–class events that offer free entertainment for everyone to enjoy.”
On July 1st the entertainment switches back to the Waterfront for Canada Day for Cultural entertainment, local performers, vendors and for those wanting to Rock – the complete AC/DC experience beginning at 7pm followed by Jukebox Heroes at 8:45pm and an incredible fireworks display around 11pm
On July 23rd we’re back on Manitoba Ave., with Bed of Roses, a Bon Jovi tribute with Rattlesnake Suitcase, Guns and Roses tribute closing out the night.
Free Ride, a tribute to the Beatles takes the stage on Aug. 5th, followed by a Salute to the Rolling Stones. All Concert on the Avenue performances start at 7pm.
Music and…. Markets
A market with Bud and Bloom Collective will also take place on Aug. 5th.
“We’re very excited to be hosting two summer markets this year in partnership with the city of Selkirk. We have so many extremely talented local makers, and they need our community’s support now more than ever,” said Christina Barr, Market Coordinator.
The city would like to remind everyone that events are never cancelled if it rains. Concerts are relocated to Memorial Hall for regular events and the Rec Complex for Canada Day. Events are always free, family friendly and feature food vendors.
