The City of Selkirk is dedicated to the safety and wellbeing of its citizens and understands the important role Lifeguards and Swim Instructors play in keeping our aquatic facilities enjoyable and safe. As such, the City of Selkirk is offering FREE certification courses to cover the training costs associated with becoming or recertify as a Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to be eligible for the free training, applicants must meet the following criteria:

- Applicant must be 16 years of age by June 17, 2024 to apply.
- Minimum Grade 10 education.
- Ability to obtain a Criminal Record Check & Child Abuse Registry check.
- Must have Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross completed by March 15, 2024.
Application Process

- The deadline to apply is February 23, 2024.
- Complete an online application form (see below).
- Applications will be reviewed, and successful applicants will be informed via email of enrollment in the program.
- Those applying for this training cost reimbursement agree to work full-time for the City of Selkirk in the coming swim season (June-August) if successfully chosen for employment.
- Priority hiring at the Selkirk Park Pool & Splash Pad will be provided to those successful in all of the training and who have previously worked at the Selkirk Park Pool & Splash Pad with the City of Selkirk.
Conditions

- Those applying for this training cost reimbursement agree to work full-time for the City of Selkirk in the coming swim season (June-August). Although participation does not guarantee employment. Hiring will take place in March/April 2024 following training.
- The person applying for this free training program must agree that they will work for the City of Selkirk as a lifeguard and/or swim instructor for the summer proceeding the training. The applicant must be available to work for the City of Selkirk full-time (40 hours per week) from June 17-September 1, 2024.
- Completion of training does not guarantee employment and/or full-time employment.
- Priority of training cost coverage will be given to returning staff from the previous swim season who are recertifying their qualifications.
- The City of Selkirk will provide training dates, in which the applicant must be available to attend the training, which will be offered in-house.
- Spaces in each course are limited.Â

Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Standard First Aid incorporates all of Emergency First Aid and is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid including: legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, chest injuries, and medical emergencies. Includes CPR-C certification.
Completion Criteria:
- Attend and participate in 100% of the course.
- Successfully demonstrate competency in required skills, activities and final evaluation.
Pre-Course Requirements:
- Previous standard first aid & CPR-C certification.
Equipment/Supplies:
- Proof of previously held SFA & CPR-C Certification
This 4 hour course/exam will review/examine the 2022 revised NL Pool course (NL Core and Pool). Participants must give the examiner the prerequisites before the course starts.Â
Completion Criteria:
- Attend and participate in 100 % of the course.
- Successfully demonstrate competency in required skills, activities and final evaluation.

- Alert Insert (print-off) featuring the new or newly emphasized technical content. The Alert Insert is available without charge by visiting the Lifesaving Manitoba website to print the required document.Â

Prior to the exam/course candidates should review the manuals listed above and make themselves familiar with the revised requirements which include a fitness component and prepare to be evaluated on the mandatory recertification items.
National Lifeguard certification is Canada’s professional lifeguard standard. This training develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgement, and a mature and responsible attitude towards the lifeguard’s role. It emphasizes prevention and effective rescue response in emergencies including first aid treatment. Candidates develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills. Fitness requirements include a timed object recovery, 50 meter sprint challenge, 50 meter rescue drill and 400 meter endurance challenge. Program includes classroom and water activities. 100 % attendance and participation are required.
Pre-Course Requirements:
- 15 years of age by first day of the course (Note: Must be 16 years of age to legally work as a lifeguard at a pool, as the per public health act)
- Bronze Cross or Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard (need not be current)
- Standard First Aid & CPR-C or Aquatic Emergency Care (need not be current but will be for employment)
- Copies of all pre-requisite certifications must be submitted to instructor on first day of class

- Successfully demonstrate competency in required skills, activities and final evaluation.
- NLS Awards will be mailed to successful candidates by the Lifesaving Society. Certification of this award is for 2 years.

The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques.
Pre-course Requirements:
- 15 years of age by the first day of the course
- Bronze Cross certification (needed by first day of the course)
Completion Criteria:
- Attend and participate in 100% of the course.
- Successfully demonstrate competency in required skills, activities and final evaluation.
- Awards will be mailed to successful candidates by the Lifesaving Society. Certification of this award is for 2 years.
