June is National Parks and Recreation Month!
The City of Selkirk is proud to offer the Parks and Recreation Month Challenge. The Parks and Recreation Month Challenge will challenge Selkirk residents and visitors to visit a different park within Selkirk every week. This program will coincide with ParticipACTION, encouraging physical activity while enjoying the beauty of our local parks!
Each week, we will be promoting a different park within Selkirk along with some suggestions for creative ways to be active!
The Selkirk Park Happy Trails group will be hosting a new challenge each week to coincide with ParticipACTION and Parks and Recreation Month! For more information on their weekly challenges, please visit their Facebook Page.
CONTEST ALERT!
You have the chance to WIN a fun prize simply by visiting the weekly promoted park! To be entered into our prize draw, you must do the following:
- Visit our weekly promoted park and snap a photo of you/your group in that park!
- 2 Bonus entries if you share a screenshot of your logged ParticipACTION minutes.Â
- Each recorded and submitted activity is an additional entry.
- Â Entries MUST be sent through Citizen Support. Submissions sent via Social Media will not be recorded.
- The winner will be contacted by Citizen Support the week of July 4-7.Â
Week 1: Hydro Park
Hydro Park is located between Eveline Avenue and Main Street and features a FREE outdoor fitness facility that is accessible 24 hours a day. The fitness equipment allows for a wide variety of flexibility, mobility, range-of-motion, cardio, and strengthening moves to provide a well rounded workout. This is the perfect place to get outside and workout in the fresh air while the kids have fun in the playground! Visit Hydro Park during the week of June 4-10 and take a photo for your chance to win!Â
Activity ideas:
- Get a workout in using the Outdoor Fitness Equipment with Instructions that Explain Safe Operation.
- Take a walk on the walking trail and try to find the hidden Waldo along the trail!

Week 2: Little Lake Park
Little Lake Park is found at the east end of Dorchester Avenue. During the summer months, it is covered awash of green with well over 100 species of plants. Most of the land is in its natural state with trails and informal walkways, including interpretive signage that explains the area’s unique ecological features. Visit Little Lake Park during the week of June 11-17 and take a photo for your chance to win!Â
Activity ideas:
- Take a walk to Little Lake and read the Interpretive Signage!
- Go for a walk on the Walking Trail with a friend!
- Have some fun playing around on the playground!

Week 3: Penwarden Park
This quiet park is located on the at west end of Moody Ave and/or Selkirk Ave. Penwarden Park features a play structure, swing set, and plenty of green space to play catch, have a picnic or just get outside and enjoy the sun. Visit Penwarden Park during the week of June 18-24 and take a photo for your chance to win!Â
Activity Ideas:
- Walk to Penwarden and relax on the benches.
- Bring your mat/blanket and try some self-led outdoor yoga! Try some of the ParticipACTION videos if you need ideas! Click here for the videos!
- Enjoy a long walk along the Penwarden Walking Trail.Â

Week 4: Selkirk Park
Selkirk Park is located next to the Marine Museum on 490 Eveline Street (corner of Queen Ave/Eveline St) at the north end of Selkirk on the banks of the Red River. Visit Selkirk Park during the week of June 25-30 and take a photo for your chance to win!Â
Activity Ideas:
- Walk around and read the Interpretive Signage.
- Walk along one of the many beautiful trails!
- Go for a swim at the Selkirk Park Pool and Splash Pad!

By choosing to register for this program, you understand that certain risks are inherent to participation in sports and recreation activities. Those that participate in these program agree to the following:
- I/we the undersigned, hereby acknowledge that certain risks of injury are inherent to participation in sports and recreational activities. These types of injuries may be minor or serious and may result from one’s actions or in-actions of others or a combination of both.
- I/we understand that the rules and regulations are designed for the safety and protection of participants and hereby undertake to abide by these rules and regulations.
- I/we understand that certain activities require a minimum level of fitness and health (physical, mental and emotional) and that each person has a different capacity of participating in these activities.
- I/we agree to allow my child to participate in off-campus field trips that may require the use of public transportation.
- I/we agree that the City of Selkirk and/or its employees, servants or agents shall not be liable for any injury to any
person or loss or damage to personal property arising from, or in any way resulting from, my or my child’s participation in these activities, unless such injury, loss or damage is caused solely by the negligence of the City or its employees, servants, or agents while acting. - I/we agree that we have read and understood the above Informed Consent Agreement in its entirety and hereby consent to participate acknowledging all the foregoing.
