Summer in Selkirk means a variety of events and markets are coming to the Waterfront and Manitoba Avenue, offering shared enjoyment and lasting memories.
Ellie Longbottom, the city’s Culture Coordinator, says she’s looking forward to the Concert Series, Port Market and Canada Day and all the other great events planned in Selkirk for the warmer weather.
“We’ve got a great lineup of performers this year, and as usual there’s something for everyone,” Longbottom said.
“We’re always combining entertainment with arts and culture and providing an array of entertainment for folks that come out to our events. You can listen to great music, try some food and shop and learn more about our city. And you get to do all this with family and friends, so all the events are just a good time.”
The two locales where events are held – the Waterfront and Manitoba Avenue – flank the revitalized section of downtown that is built to attract visitors, whether they arrive by vehicle or on foot or bike.
Entertainment in accessible and active river-front downtown
The area itself is accessible, with sidewalks that are wheelchair accessible. All events feature accessible portable washrooms and accessible parking spots. A ramp from Eveline will take you all the way down to the Waterfront. If you have concerns about accessibility, attendees can contact the city through CitizenSupport at 204-785-4900 or [email protected].
Active Transportation pathways also make their way from Manitoba Avenue right down to the Waterfront and down Eveline.
Sean Taylor and Hearts on Fire kick the season off
All concerts are free and the first is June 8 at the Waterfront and it starts at 7pm. The season opener features Hearts on Fire, a country band that pays tribute to ‘90s music, channelling the spirit of the era with tunes by Patti Loveless, Marty Stuart and Mary Chapin Carpenter in a toe-tapping, two-stepping good time.
At 8:30 pm the Sean Taylor Band hits the stage for the second year in a row with an energetic mix of country, rock and pop. According to the band, “Our wide array of music will keep you singing all through the night, so bring your dancing shoes and your best singing voice and party all night!”
Rocking the waterfront with Dreams and Rumors and Zed Zeppelin
On July 20 it’s the popular Rock the Waterfront with Fleetwood Mac tribute band ‘Dreams and Rumours’ on stage at 7 pm. The Winnipeg-based band is well known for its commitment to recreating the Fleetwood Mac experience.
They’re followed by Led Zeppelin tribute band, Zed Zeppelin, who perform all the timeless songs spanning Zeppelin’s entire career and delivering the look, sound, and feel of the most enduring band in rock history.
Music on Manitoba and night market
On Aug. 10 it’s Music on Manitoba and the Night Market in partnership with Bud and Bloom. The market runs from 4pm to 9pm and features an array of unique, handmade treasures crafted by talented artisans.
The music portion is fulfilled by A.R Cash, Johnny and June duo who pay tribute to the country legends and also share history of their careers. They hit the stage at 7pm.
Damn the Torpedoes are the premier Tom Petty tribute band on the Prairies and they will rock Manitoba starting at 8:30pm.
All concert series events feature food vendors and they are never cancelled. If it rains, they will be moved indoors and the city will post information on its social media channels as well as on the website MySelkirk.ca.
The city’s Community Strategic Plan makes having a vibrant, safe and healthy community a priority and the event lineup achieves that goal by making use of Selkirk’s natural features and outdoor spaces, providing the best recreational opportunities for residents and by revitalizing downtown.
