The Waterfront will be the place to be July 1 when the City of Selkirk presents the annual Canada Day event.
Ellie Longbottom, Selkirk’s Culture Coordinator, says the day offers something for everyone and is sure to once again draw a crowd from near and far.
Day kicks off with tales for trails, market and kids zone
The daytime will be filled with fun – Makers Market by Bud & Bloom for the shoppers, and the Kids Zone, both of which start at 4pm.
“Canada Day at the Waterfront is an event that people look forward to every year,” Longbottom said.
“Some people just enjoy grabbing a bite to eat and wandering around by the waterfront on a nice summer day and others park their lawn chairs and listen to the great bands and performers on the stage. Shoppers love the market and of course there’s the fireworks, which are always a big hit.”
The city is partnering with United for Literacy to offer a Tales & Trails walk featuring the book “Rock Your Mocs” by Laurel Goodluck and Madelyn Goodnight. It will be set up by the Selkirk Park Pool and runs from noon to 8pm.
“The goal of Tales & Trails is to build children’s interest in reading while encouraging a healthy outdoor activity that everyone can enjoy,” says Sandra Ross, Community Coordinator with United for Literacy.
“It’s an innovative and exciting way for children and adults to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time.”
The Kids Zone might be a misnomer because it’s really for folks of all ages. The zone features Glitter Bug glitter tattoos and Kurrent Motion Hoop Jam who will have hips swirling – kids, moms, dads, and grandparents are encouraged to give it a spin.
The City of Selkirk Block Party Trailer will be onsite with fun and games for families to enjoy.
Access Credit Union Stage – Entertainment All Night Long
The city is partnering with the Manitoba Métis Federation to present five acts – The Breeze and The Métis Man in Black, Kinew Métis Youth Council Dancers, Norman Chief Memorial Dancers, and United Thunder.
All acts are on the Waterfront Stage sponsored by Access Credit Union and the first performer kicks if all off at 4pm.
The City of Selkirk presents Orvis & His Higher Guns with their brand of country music with features covers of everyone from Alan Jackson to Dwight Yoakam and Hank Williams. Next up will be Sheena Rattai, a Winnipeg-based folk/roots/pop artist.,
Other performers include ZRADA, who put their own unique spin on Ukrainian folk music and closing out the night will be Men in Cheap Suits, a sensational R&B Funk Band.
After Men in Cheap Suits the best fireworks display in the Interlake will begin at 11pm, sponsored by South Beach Casino and Resort.
Getting to the waterfront is easy with Selkirk Transit offering free service every half hour starting at 5 pm and ending after the fireworks. Route information can be found at MySTA.ca.
