Main Street Reconstruction Project: as part of the Main Street Reconstruction project, we are twinning the force main that runs along Main Street.
Throughout the city, wastewater sewers transport sewage from properties using gravity. Eventually, the slope of the pipe gets too deep, and we install a lift station to send wastewater to the Wastewater Treatment Plant via a force main. The force main that runs along Main Street is a critical piece of infrastructure that carries 90% of the city’s sewage to the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Adding a second pipe is a proactive measure that will allow us to switch between the two pipes, reducing the risk of mass sewage leaks as seen in other communities and ensuring continuous sewage flow. This will also allow us to perform future upgrades to the existing pipe more easily, reducing the risk of pipe failure.
The tie-in to the existing force main is anticipated to start on July 9 at around 8pm, with crews working at Main and Robinson, and on Dufferin Avenue by the lift station (near the Kiwanis on the Red building). While the work will cause minimal disruption, residents near the work area may notice increased activity from trucks and crews working that night.
To help this work be completed as quickly and smoothly as possible, we are asking residents to reduce their water consumption on July 9 from 2pm until the early morning on July 10. Please try completing tasks that use larger amounts of water — like showering, laundry, and dishwashing — before or after this period. Doing so will enable the crews to complete the work faster.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
