WHEREAS: Ringette was first played in Canada in 1963 created by Sam Jacks in an effort to draw more women to play sports; and
WHEREAS: The sport of Ringette was introduced in Manitoba in 1967 in Fort Garry, with the Manitoba Ringette Association (Ringette Manitoba) established in 1972; and
WHEREAS: Currently Manitoba has just under 3,000 registered players ranging in ages from 3 to 50. There are also over 800 bench personnel and 125 officials; and
WHEREAS: Ringette is a great choice if you are looking for a safe competitive sport for your child. They’ll learn to skate, pass, and play in a team—all while making friends and having fun; and
WHEREAS: Ringette offers a wide range of health benefits for both children and adults which include increased cardiovascular fitness (Ringette is a high-intensity sport that requires players to skate at top speeds, which can help improve cardiovascular fitness and endurance), Improved muscle tone and strength (Ringette requires players to use a wide range of muscle groups, including those in the legs, core, and arms, which can help improve muscle tone and strength), Increased coordination and balance (Ringette requires players to move quickly and change direction frequently, which can help improve coordination and balance) and Reduced risk of injury (Ringette is a non-contact sport, which means that players are less likely to suffer from injuries such as concussions and broken bones);
THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED that I, Larry Johannson, Mayor of the City of Selkirk, in the Province of Manitoba do hereby proclaim the weekend of November 28 – December 1, 2024 to be “Ringette Weekend” in Selkirk and commend its thoughtful observance to all citizens.
