Pursuant to the City of Selkirk Business Permit Bylaw No. 5273, any business or other economic activity conducted in the City of Selkirk requires a Business Permit, subject to the appropriate fees, which become due and payable upon commencement of that activity. The collected information will be kept confidential subject to the privacy policy of the City of Selkirk. Only the aggregate data will be used by the City of Selkirk for statistical and planning purposes. We ask all businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations to fill the entire form (where applicable), which will provide us with sufficient data to foster economic activities and maintain up-to-date information.

FAQ’s

Why do I require a permit?

The purpose of the proposed Business Permit By-law is to allow the operation of any business or other economic activity within the City of Selkirk and to develop a database on all business activities.

No person shall carry on any business or other economic activity in the City without a valid Business Permit.

What are the benefits of filling out a business permit?

By filling out a business permit, you are helping the City develop a database on all business activities.

The business or economic database will help in establishing Local Economic Metrics and Benchmarks for further economic growth of the city.

Why is the City of Selkirk collecting data?

The collected information will be kept confidential subject to the privacy policy of the City of Selkirk. Only the aggregate data will be used by the City of Selkirk for statistical and planning purposes.

Who is excluded from business permit fees?

There is no business permit fee for charitable/not-for-profit/government organizations, business tax payers, and rental housing, secondary suites, hotels, & condominium management companies.  However, they are required to complete the annual business permit application including the survey.

When does my business permit expire?

Every Business Permit issued under the terms of the By-law No. 5273 shall terminate at midnight on the 31st of December of the year in which said Business Permit was issued unless the Business Permit has been cancelled or forfeited.

When do I have to renew my business permit?

Business Permit renewal shall be paid in full prior to midnight on the 31st day of March of the year in which the existing Business Permit expires.

Is my business permit transferable?

Any Business Permit issued under this By-law is transferable only in the case of a change in ownership for the remaining period of the current year.

What if I relocate my business?

A Business Permit issued for a home based business or home occupation shall become null and void if the said applicant relocates the business to a subsequent residential premise.

What if my business operates out of more than one location?

Each unique or different business activity that operates at more than one location, owned by the same person or business requires a separate Business Permit.

If the same business is carried on at more than one location, a separate Business Permit is required for each location with no extra fee to the business.

Where is my permit valid?

A Business Permit issued under provision of this By-law is only valid at the location for which it is issued.

Do I have to display my business permit?

Every Business Permit issued under this By-law shall be displayed in a public location at the place of business or the Permitee shall be able to produce the Business Permit where the business activity is being undertaken.

When is a business permit not required?

Any activity carried on by the City or at a location operated by an official or employee of the City acting on behalf of the City in his capacity as such official or employee.

For any activity exempted from municipal licensing by any statute of Canada or the Province of Manitoba.

For such other activities as Council may by resolution exempt from the requirements of this By-law.

How long will my permit take to process?

Permits can take up to five business days to be processed and approved
